Learning and Teaching in the Hong Kong School Context

This course is a compulsory course in the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) (Honours) and Post-graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary/Primary) combined programme.

Students are strongly advised to complete it at an early stage of their studies. It must be taken before students enrol on EDU E863/EDU E872C.

Entry requirement
To enrol in this course, students must meet the entry requirements of the Bachelor of Language Studies (English) (Honours) and Post-graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary/Primary) combined programme.

Aims
The course aims to:

• Develop in learners a basic understanding of the Hong Kong education and school system;
• Provide learners with knowledge of the structure and operations of primary and secondary schools;
• Introduce learners to the roles and responsibilities of school teachers;
• Develop in learners a basic understanding of the teaching and learning processes;
• Provide opportunities for learners to obtain field experience in primary/secondary schools;
• Lay a firm foundation for learners to become teachers in the future.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

• The Hong Kong education system and our schools
• Becoming a teacher
• Teaching and learning in schools
• Classroom teaching and beyond
• Gaining practical experience in schools

Learning support
This course involves 150 study hours. There will be eight two-hour tutorials.

Assessment
There are three assignments (the last of which is a portfolio and reflective report on the experience of school observation). Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

Online requirement
This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). You can find the latest course information from the OLE. Through the OLE students can communicate electronically with their tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. To access the OLE, students will need to have access to the Internet.

A small percentage of an assignment requires students to participate in online activities.

Students who are not familiar with the use of the Internet should enrol in IT E150 Information Technology for Learning at the same time.

Equipment
Students will need access to a personal computer and the Internet.
